Student life in Birmingham
|
|
Birmingham is home to over 50,000 students. There are 3 universities here: the University of Birmingham, Aston University and Birmingham City University (formerly UCE). Your university provides you with a huge array of academic, social and sporting opportunities, but there’s plenty of scope for escaping the confines of university life. The city centre offers you live music at the National Indoor Arena and the Carling Academy, or at the Symphony Hall, depending what you’d rather listen to. Then there are 2 Premier League football clubs and the Cricket Ground, and plenty of sporting competitions at the NIA, if you like live sport. And don’t forget the cinemas, museums, art galleries and theatres! If you’re religious, there are places of worship for many faiths. Many a student frequents the bars and clubs of Broad Street and Brindley place to take in the superb nightlife, or visit the restaurants and cafes scattered throughout the city. Foodies should try out the Chinese Quarter and the Balti Triangle. There’s plenty of shopping along New Street, and of course there’s the redeveloped Bullring shopping centre, which includes the iconic new Selfridges building. For a more exclusive shopping experience, the Mailbox offers designer stores for fashion and lifestyle. (Your wallet will be considerably lighter after a shopping trip here…) Living in Selly Oak and the surrounding area, you are local to the University of Birmingham and all its facilities. Transport links into town are good, with a train station and numerous buses. Cycling’s good too, with some lovely cycle routes away from the main roads. However, there’s no need to head into town for a few drinks or a meal out - there are plenty of eating and drinking establishments round here, mostly geared towards students, which can be useful for a cheaper evening out when you’re saving up to pay the rent. |
